Retief Schuhart Empty
PostSubject: Retief Schuhart   Retief Schuhart Empty4/27/2015, 8:35 pm

Name: Retief Schuhart

Species: Pine Marten

Age: 23

Gender: Male

Weapons Used:

1x steel dirk with a 14 inch straight blade and ivory grip
1x cat o' nine tails with 9x 2.5 foot long knotted cotton cords
1x single tailed whip with an 8 foot long leather tail
1x 35 foot long rope lasso
1x skinning knife with a 3-inch blade and a hilted grip to prevent slipping

Background:

The Schuharts are a slaving family. The name Schuhart has been inextricably linked with the Rekkr slave trade for nearly two centuries. Schuhart kits are introduced to the family business at a young age, given a personal slave each as their complete responsibility. They are taught how slaves think, how to control them, giving out punishments and rewards, and how to fight if need be. The great hall of the Schuharts is lined with portraits of great pine martens who brought glory and riches to their House through the business of slavery, so that the younger generations of the family might aspire to even greater ambitions.

The Schuhart family keep is set in the steep cliffs and winding paths of the Kaldr Mountains. Retief grew up with his twin brother Redrick here, playing and squabbling in the cold echoing halls and adventuring below to the labyrinthine dungeons. Their father, Redmond, oversaw much of their education and training in order to foster a new generation of loyal, ambitious Schuhart slavers. They were allowed to go on slaving expeditions and trips to the markets so they could learn how to properly value slaves, discreetly hide any defects and get the best sale possible.

There was a final test Retief and his brother had to take in order to be permitted to go on slaving expeditions under their own banners. Redmond had his two sons drugged to unconsciousness, stripped of clothing and weapons, and dumped in the frigid, pitch-black dungeons under the keep, along with a few slave escapees with death warrants on their heads. Retief and Redrick were expected to gain control of the situation through any means necessary. Since the brothers knew the dungeons like the backs of their paws, it didn't take them too long to sneak into the armory, find their weapons, and either kill or round up the escapees.

Redmond had saved the worst part of the test for last. Retief and Redrick's personal slaves, the two beasts the brothers had grown up with, were ordered to attack the brothers as they worked their way up to the exit. Redrick slew his own slave, one of the only friends he had aside from his brother, without hesitation. Retief couldn't bring himself to do likewise. His slave, an otter named Benjy, couldn't be brought to kill his master either.

Furious with his son's failure, Redmond ordered that Retief undergo the traditional form of exile for disgraced Schuharts. Retief was to be abacinated, that was to be blinded by a red-hot iron held too close to his eyes. Then, he would be set on some ship or caravan far away, to aimlessly wander the savage wilderness forever. However, Redrick took pity on his ever so slightly younger twin brother, and helped him escape before this terrible fate could be enacted.

Once away from the family keep, Retief caught rumours that his brother had been exiled. He snuck back to the keep to confirm this with Benjy, who attested that Redmond had found out about Redrick's treachery, and had blinded his son personally. Overcome with fury, Retief snuck into his father's quarters, and what terrible things he did to Redmond before he finally killed the old marten do not bear repeating. Let it be said though that Redmond found that his son had been a most attentive pupil when it came to the art of causing pain.

Retief had learned from the slaves that Redrick had been taken to the port at Vandr Bustadr. He chased after Redrick, only to find his ship had long set sail. He found out from the harbourmaster that the blinded pine marten had been taken to the mainland, though whether they had made port or simply dumped his brother along the coastline remained to be seen. Retief decided to take the next ship to Eyrr Spit, in the hopes that he would pick up the trail there.

Personality:

Every end justifies the means for Retief. His life of having to look up to the past successes of his family has given him the perspective that the world is there to be exploited by the strong and the ambitious, and anybeast that gets hurt along the way was obviously not going to go very far in life anyway. The acquisition of wealth, power, respect and fear are Retief's general life goals overall. He believes that history is made by 'Great Beasts', those that have through their gold, charisma or prowess in battle shaped the world to their liking.

Retief's confidence and self-esteem rest on shaky ground however, as deep down he constantly questions if there is some innate cowardice or weakness within himself that prevented him from killing Benjy like he was supposed to. He refuses to see his actions as compassionate, or recognise that his hesitance was a result of love or friendship or any other emotion that is perfectly natural for a thinking creature. Instead, he is tormented by the possibility that one day, this imagined crack in his mental armour will be split asunder, and his inner weakness will be his downfall.

Retief is very attached to his (slightly older by a few minutes) twin brother, Redrick. He envies his brother's strength, force of will and charisma, things that Retief believes he needs to live up to. He also feels intensely protective of his brother as the one that is closest to him and understands his hopes and insecurities better than any other.

Retief has a fear of intimacy brought about by a lack of tuition in regards to matters like love and companionship, and often mistakes lust and obsession for those things. As such, distinctions between 'friends', 'lovers', and 'beasts who are now my property' are very blurred with Retief, especially since the only friends he's ever had that haven't been family members were all slaves he or his brother owned. So, those that know Retief may find it odd that he can be simultaneously abusive and caring towards them. Retief likes to travel with an entourage of lackeys if he can, for companionship, for their to be somebeasts readily available to praise his great deeds, and for protection should his own skills fail to prevent him from being lynched.

Strengths:

Retief is adept at the methods of enslaving and controlling beasts, through force, intimidation, persuasion, force of personality and manipulation. He has been trained in light forms of combat with his natural weapons of claws and teeth, as well as fighting with a dirk and knife, which can be used in combination. He's also skilled with the use of whips, as a tool for enforcing control, spreading fear, or even as an improvised weapon. He can also lasso fleeing slaves with some skill.

Weaknesses:

Makes impractical and impulsive decisions based on emotional whims and nebulous concepts like pride, glory or the family name. Speaks without thinking, has little to no scholarly education. Suffers from frequent nightmares about his various crimes against others, is tormented by an inferiority complex and massive guilt concerning the fate of his brother and his failures as a member of the Schuhart family. Unbeknownst to Retief, his medical situation is deteriorating thanks to a parasitic worm within him. As such, he is constantly hungry, experiences frequent bouts of nausea, abdominal pain, and fluctuating weight. This infestation is likely to be fatal in the long term.

Additional Information:

Retief, like any pine marten of good breeding, has an eye for valuables, trinkets and high fashion. His dark brown fur is usually well-brushed and glossy. He is fond of wearing jewelry, painting sigils and beauty marks on his fur, and wearing expensive silk shirts, gold-hemmed tunics and thick extravagant cloaks. His ears have been pierced multiple times, and he has a gold tooth in his smile. His tail has a few braids with pearls and beads, and his neck is always adorned with some expertly knotted colourful neckcloth to bring out the thick yellow fur on his chin, neck and chest.

Rascal, NPC's cannot be played stand alone, if you wish to use an NPC you must have at least one of your own approved characters in the thread.
