(Open) Mud Fog and Tombstones Empty
PostSubject: (Open) Mud Fog and Tombstones   (Open) Mud Fog and Tombstones Empty3/9/2015, 5:13 pm

The Myr, a place on a map, marshland and hills located between the rivers Lygr and Mikill, a dangerous place, one which her father would never let her go. But he was not here now. Ialla tramped threw the marsh grass, Her tail wrapped around her arm to keep it from dragging in the muck. This didn't help things for now she was off balance without the proper use of her tail, however she preferred to keep it dry.

She misstepped and her foot sank down up to her knee in water. She she stretched out her paw to catch herself on the muddy bank and pulled herself out using the branch of a low lying shrub. She tried wiping her muddy paw off on the marsh grass but gave up and resorted to using the hem of her tunic, which didn't do much good either.

She was an explorer though and could deal... a little mud never hurt any one right? Though in the long run it would make her life more difficult. She ran the back of her wrist over her brow trying to avoid getting mud on her face, It didn't work and left a thin smear of mud.

Ialla looked around at the fog and then up at where the sky should be "Where are you?" She muttered and let our a whistle before continuing. She stooped short and her paw went to her dirk as a figure rose out of the fog. They stood across from each other not moving for what seemed like forever. Perhaps he hadn't seen her. She crept closer only to find that it was just the stump of a long dead tree. She sighed and let her paw fall from her weapon.

Just then Taiben flew down from the fog and landed on the stump. "Taiben don't like it here," He said looking around nervously shifting from on claw to the other. "There bees snakes here fer sure, me kin feel it,"

"If you don't like it you did't have to come," Ialla said absentmindedly as she looked at her compass which hung on a chain around her neck and took out one of her father maps from her pack. "There ain't many trees in these parts, It makes a good land mark, If my father had passed threw here he would have taken advantage of that. See here she said pointing to a mark on the map, it looks like there is a hill not far from here, Says Archen's hill here. We may be able to get above the fog and get a better look around," She said rolling the map back up and stashing it back in her bag.

"Yew mean Yew kin get a better look round, me kin fly," Taiben said. Ialla just rolled her eyes and started off into the fog again. after walking for a few minutes they came upon a perfectly round hill rising out of the marsh. Ialla climbed to the top and sat down glad to find a piece of dry land to rest on. Taiben flew over and perched on a rock sitting at the peek of the hill. Ialla hardly gave him a second glance. She was already taking out the map again.

"There bees fury's Scribbles here!" Taiben said pecking at the rock.

"That's nice," Ialla said absentmindedly, it took her a moment before what he had said dawned on her, "Wait what did you say?"

"there bees scribbles on dis rock here," Taiben said. Ialla went over and shooed him off the rock. Taiben hopped off on the the grass and peared at the words curiously. "What dose it say?" He asked. It was times like these when he wished he could read.

"Archen, May those who parish walk the paths of eternity in the realm of forever... it's a tomb stone,"

A rather poetic verse for a such a dreary place to be burried. It was a sign that just because a beast lived in such back water territory that did not mean they could not have a love of the fine arts.

More importantly it ment that the two beasts were not alone out here in the wild lands of the Myr.

Little did they know how true that was.

A pair of gold eyes observed their movements from the tall grass around them. What mannor of creature they belonged too was lost to the fog.

Then slowly the eyes retreated, dissapeqring into the grass. Only the sound of grass being displaced could be heard. The sound though was faint, like the sound of a breeze flowing freely through the land.

Except there was no breeze...

Ialla looked at Taiben uncomfortably. Suddenly the hill did not seem as welcoming a place to be knowing that a beast was buried beneath their footpaws. They heard a rustle in the wind and Ialla looked around nervously. It wall all just a little unnerving.

"Me don't like Furries ghosts," Taiben said hopping around in little nervous flights.

"Come on," she said standing up and shifting the pack on her back. "Can you check where the sun is?"

Taiben took a few hops before taking to the air. he returned after a moment and said "It's two points after the peek," Which was his way of saying it was about 2:00. Ialla sighed, the hill would have made a nice fortified place to make camp but she didn't think she could get over the fact that she would be sleeping on a grave. besides she still had some time before night and she wanted to make the most of it. Then again they might not find a suitable place before night fall...

"let's stop here and eat before we go on," She said setting her pack down ans sitting cross legged on the grass. She took out some bread and Taiben went off to find some bugs to eat while Ialla pored over the map and her father journals which he had left behind when he headed out to explore new worlds.

She took out her own blank note book and began copying the inscription on the gravestone. Taiben came back with a beetle in his beak and Ialla tried to ignore the sickening crunch it made when he ate it. "Could you not..."

"Not what?" Taiben asked completely oblivious to her discomfort.

"eating in my ear,"

"I'm not... Why would I eat your ear?" He said puzzled. Ialla looked to the fog covered sky in exasperation and gave up. "It looks like there is more written here but it is not in the common tongue. This inscription looks really old..." She said copying it all into her note book. Perhaps she could find some one to translate it some time. He father had been her before, he had marked the place on the map. He might have his own notes on the topic.

"What's so nice bout a ghost furies deathstone?" Taiben asked cocking his head.

"We are Explorers, this tombstone tells us about the past who lived here before we came here," She said flipping threw her father journal.

Perhaps the little mouse would be meeting some of the previous inhabitants of the land...perhaps sooner than she might like.

The myr was full of noises. Birds in the distance and the sounds of insects buzzing about. They were an ever present companion in the myr.

So when the sounds of life came to a sudden and abrupt halt it was if someone had turned off the sound as one snuffs out a lamp.

The silence decended upon the area like blanket, leaving the two beasts alone in the dense fog.

Alone with the odd rustling noise of something moving through the tall grass.

Even on a clear day the Myr was not know for its wide open spaces. The terrain was uneven and covered in pockets of tall grass and shrubs. The fog made it all but impossible to see beyond a stone toss's distance and all that could be smelled was the thick almost overwhelming humidity in the air.

The noise itself was faint but quickly growing louder as it moved towards them.

Taiben hopped around inspecting Iallas work and pretending he knew what she was doing. "shoo," She said waving her paw at the bird "I can't work with you hanging over me like this," Taiben hopped and flew back a pace. Ialla felt something on her arm slapped it leaving a smear of mud and a red stain on her arm. "These accursed bugs," She muttered crossly flicking it's squashed caucus off her arm. Where Taiben promptly pecked it up. "At least some one is enjoying them..." She said.

Ialla froze, here ears perked up, searching listening. Taiben had noticed it too. Something was wrong... off... what was it. The silence! It was way to quiet. Ialla scooped up her things and shoved them back in her satchel unceremoniously. She was smart enough to know that silence meant something bad. Either a storm or another beast. Then she heard the rustling in the grass. Some beast was getting closer.

She drew her dirk, her sling would be useless in this fog. Her ears twitched trying to triangulate the source of the sound. All other senses where blinded.

The rustling continued. Closer and closer it came, it's faint noise seeming to come from the direction that the mouse had come, as if some beast were tracking her.

One might have been alarmed by the lack of footsteps it made...

Then with out warning it stopped, right out of view in the fog. What ever creature this was still could not be seen, and it was standing still enough that it could not be heard except for shallow breathing.

The sound of the twig snapping seemed to echo in the silence. The sound was loud...and came from behind the mouse.

"@#$!" Something hissed a curse in a forign language from the tall grass behind the mouse. An instant later two figures burst from the tall grass.

The pine martens just seemed to appear from the fog. Free of their winter coats the two pine martens were covered in short but poorly groomed fur. They moved so quickly that indivdual markings were lost save for the fur of their underbelly which was light gold, the other redish orange.

Both pine martens wores wood masks decorated with feathers and beads. The marten with the redish orange coloring wore a bead vest and leather bands around his arms.

The other pine marten left his chest and pot gut exposed save for a simple lizard hide loin cloth about his hips. While the red bellied marten weilded a club with feathers tied to one end, the other tossed a rope with a loop tied into it towards the mouse, trying to lasso her arms together.

Both let out a savage yell as they charged the beasts.

She heard the snap behind her and she let out a curse of her own "@&%! There are two of them," She said under her breath. The two martens burst out of the fog shouting in a savage attack and Ialla let out a shout to match as she sliced threw the rope that threatened to tightened around her middle. Taiben flew at the others face with his full weight (which was not much) pecking and clawing at the eye holes in the mask before flying off into the mist and disappearing.

The red marten fell backwards, dropping his club to sheild his eyes from the birds savage attack. "Off! Git it off!" The marten curled into a ball, trying to protect himself.

The heavy set bandit however was still in equally dire straits. He seemed to pause, watching the mouse cut through the rope with easy. "Bleedin..." the beast gulped.

This was SO not going to plan. Mice were not normally so...intimidating. But in the end it didn't matter who ran a blade through your hide...

Regaining his composure the marten leaned forward, almost on all fours. He produced a blade from his belt. It was an iron blade. Double edged with feathers tied to the hilt. For the marten it was but a dagger, but for the mouse it may have as well been the size of a short sword.

"Y'r a fiesty one arn't che?" The beast sneared. He gestured with his free paw to the mouse, "But yer out of yer depth here. H-hand over your belongings and w'll let yo' go..."

As he spoke the marten began to pace away from his comrade, trying to circle around the mouse to have her trapped between them!

Ialla started to back up keeping both vermin in her sight, her dirk raised in a defensive stance.

"'Ere I'll give you some of the food and the wine without a fight but I keeps the maps and books and things, they ain't no use to yous anyways," She said eyeing the one with the dagger.

"If you wants a fight I can promise you that you won't come out of it without some nasty wounds," She knew that on normal ground she could out run the both of them, but in this marsh she wasn't so sure. Still if it came down to it...

It was hard to gage the emotions of the marten while he wore a mask. He did seem to hesitate for a moment though, as if weighing the risks of catching the mouse against any potential harm she might do if he tried.

Any hope for a peacefull solution however was lost when the marten's skinnier counterpart let out a savage yell. The beast leaped to his feet. He shook his staff menecingly towards the mouse. "Ferget that! Her little pet dang well nearly pecked out my eyes! Kill her!"

The heavy set marten chittered in reply. Then both marten's lept at the same time from both sides of the mouse!. One swung his club for her head, the other stabbed forward with his dagger.

Oh well... She hadn't really wan'ted to give them her food any way. The prospect of going hungry for a few days was not exactly the way she wanted to spend her time here. Though getting run threw was just as unpleasant a prospect.

The two would not be pacified and they leaped at her from either side, but she was no longer there. She had taken a tremendous leap, one that would have taken the martians a good two paces to cover and landed by the tombstone.

The fat marten twists his head to follow the mouse and begins to pursue her. Unfortunetly his counter part's swing is in mid motion. Momentum carries the club through the air and-

CRACK!

-the mask came flying off and the plump marten fell to his knees clutching desperately to the back of his head.

"GAAAAaaaAAAaAaAAh!" he shrieks.

"Bushtail you blasted fool! Why you gone dun put yer head thar?" the other bandit scolded the marten. "Now git up! She is gettin away!" The thief drew back his club as if to throw at the mouse. He stopped however stopped when the ground began to rumble. There was a reason they called grave yards 'hallowed' ground.

One which they were all about to discover as the ground around the grave began to sink in.

The ground that covered the mound shook and began to collapse with the two martens still standing on the hill. Ialla had already jumped off the hill and darted into the marsh scrambling as the soft ground around the mound shifted. She was caught in shifting mass and the mud caught her foot and turned her around. She was in the water up to her waist and the mud had her caught up to her knees.

She grabbed her satchel and pulled it out of the water holding it up trying to keep its continence from getting damage. Though it seemed a little to late.

"Really..." she said looking the satchel over mournfully. She sighed and holding the bag above her head with one paw she tried to pull herself out with the other but was unsuccessful. She cupped her paw to her mouth and cried out in a long imitative call "Chicka dee dee dee dee dee dee dee! Chicka dee dee dee dee dee dee dee!"

her voice echoed threw the marsh but there was only silence in response. Silence and more fog.

The marten's were not quite so fortunet as the mouse. They fell into the sink hole that formed under them. "Son of a..." one pine marten could be heard shouting through the fog. "Quick! Give me a boost! She is getting away."

Various other curses and shouting could be heard as they struggled to get out of the pit. By the time they made it out of the pit they were both muddy messes. They were tired, sore, and had a desperate need to clobber a mouse. The shout made it all too easy to find her.

Rushing through the brush the scrawny pine marten took the lead. "You no good rodent rascal. I'm going to make a vest out of your..."

The marten came to a pause mere feet away from the mouse so quickly that his companion bumped into him from behind. Both beasts seemed to stare at not the explorer but something begind her.

With out another word the thieves turned tail and ran as quickly as their feet would carry them.

"A pitty..." came a sharp hiss from behind the mouse.

The hiss belonged to the snake that lifted its head out of the bushes behind the mouse. A massive copper headed rattle snake. His bright gold eyes seemed to gleam in the fog as he stared unblinking at the explorer.

"I wassss hoping they would stay for dinnersss..."

Ialla struggled in the mud hole she had been caught in, looking around frantically for the useless Chickadee who was supposed to be coming to her rescue. She could hear the angry shouts and noises of the Martens as they made there way out of the hole and she doubled her efforts but only managed to get more stuck. She was just about to prepare to cut up the vermin's ankles with her dirk when they ran off in fight.

She heard a noise behind her and turned to to see. She froze with fear her eyes locked with the snakes. The lock was broken only when something collided with the back of the snakes hooded head, with wings and claw and beak shreeking incoherent "Snake! Snake!" With what could only be described as foolish bravery.

Ialla blinked and shook herself managing to pull her self free driven on by a fear and a panic.

Foolish or not the sudden appearence of the bird smacking into his head causes the viper to gasp in shock. He recovers in time to see the mouse running off into the same direction as the pine martens. "Wait! Don't go runningssSSss off! Now I got to..." the snake lets out a sigh. "BlasSSsst." Now he had to go. Chase the beasts down and murder them. What a bother.

Up ahead of the mouse the two pine martens had paused to hide behind the a small rock. The fatter of the two was wrapped up in a ball rocking back and forth, staring off into space. "He's coming for me...he's coming for me..." he mumbled to himself.

"Com on Tor! Snap out of it! Basilisk is after us!" The other marten tried rocking the thief back to his senses. "Blazes Tor this is not the time to panic!" Well, actually it was but that was beside the point. "I ain't going to get myself eaten trying to save your fat tail again! Now move it!"

Far behind them all the snake slithered towards them at a brisk but not overly hurried pace.

Ialla sped along in a series of long bounds Taiben flying as fast as he could behind her. He soon over took her his previous bravery completely gone. Ialla was going so fast she soon caught up with the two pine martens. She dropped down near, but not to near, them to catch her breath.

"Hey lets work together on this one an I promise you ah'll make ya meal y'wont soon forget. Assuming we gets out of this alive," She said hoping beyond hope that they would see the sense in this. If anything else they would not kill her right away because she was one more thing between them and the snake.

OOC: So so sorry that this took so long... XP I just kept forgetting and then getting busy and then forgetting again.

The two martens look at the mouse then at each other. "Its perfect!" shouts the skinnier marten. "We can work together and feed the mouse to the snake! Then dash away while she is being eaten!" The marten takes a step forward then pauses when his companion doesn't move.

"Tor?"

"It's no use...I'm doomed! He almost ate me once and he won't stop until he does..." The plump beast rocks back and forth staring off into space.

Somewhere behind them a loud hiss cuts through the fog, "Oh missster marteeeen! Come out come out where eversss you aaareee! I only want to eat you! JusSSst a little!" There was a pause. "Ssserioussly. It'ss cold. I'm wet. And I tire of chasing you. You are making me angery. You won't like me when I'm angry..."

The other marten sighs. Pulling at his ears the beast turns to the mouse. "Fine. What...what did you have in mind?"

Ialla took a step back when the skinny marten started for her but froze when the snakes eerie voice came threw the fog. It seemed to scare the marten into accepting her help and she relaxed, if only just a bit.

"If my maps are right there's a sink hole not to far to the south east of here, if we can lead him to it he will never bother you again," She said looking around for Taiben but not seeing him anywhere. where was that scatterbrained bird?

The lead marten pulled at his ears and ran his paws over his snout. "Ok fine. Fine! You lead the way and we will follow. That old snake wont know what hit him!"

"I won't know whatssSSss?"

There was a pause. A horrible, timeless pause as both martens gulped at once. Tor slowly lifted his head while his brother turned to see the head of the snake poking over the rock behind them. It seemed that in the time it took to make the plan that the snake had caught up with them.

"And did you jusSst call me oldsSs?"

Basilisk was greeted by another pause from the martens. Tor let his mouth drop open, a gurgling noise came from his throat.

"Um...no?" Tor's brother replied. Then with little warning he pulled Tor to the side. A moment later the snakes head crashed into the ground where the fat marten once was.

Basilisk spat out grass in disgust but shook the rattler of his tail with much delight. If it wasn't so cold out these three beasts would already be safely tucked away in his stomach and he could return to the warmth of his cave.

But even in the cold there was no reason not to enjoy the hunt.

"Run! Run you fools!" the marten leader ran past the mouse as he dragged his brother along. "YOU.MOUSE.LEAD.GO.GO.GO.GO!"

By this point Ialla was back to her old confident self and before turning and following the pair she waved a salute at the snake and said "Wisdom comes with age!" She turned on her heel, bounded past the martens and shouted as she went, "And it's Kangaroo rat to you mister!"

She was searching for the land mark, the very important land mark, that land mark that if she missed it all of them would die of suffocation... that is except for Taiben, where was that bird?! And there it was, The land mark. A toppled over totem pole half buried in a large sand bar. She skirted the sand and climbed onto the pole. "You two keep going I'll be right behind you," She said urging the martens on.

With the snake closing in on them there was little time to argue. The pine marten continued to run forward with Tor flailing his arms and panicing behind him.

The snake slithered along, pausing to look up at the mousy rat. "My appologiesSSs missSSs. Perhapss you would like to come down here and see if you are as eatable as a mousSSsy, yeaSSssSs?"

Looking crom the rat to the fleeing martens Basilisk weighed his options. "Maybe as dessSssert." Turning his attention away from her the snake continued to pursue the more meaty beasts.

The snake was leaving, here was her chance, she could make a run for it and get away while he was chasing the martens... they where just going to kill her anyway, she doubted that they had planed to keep their agreement... but then she had made a promise. She had said she would help them so...

"I am going to regret this," she said to herself.

Ialla Leaped from her perch and landed on the Rattlers tail stabbing down with her dirk and then bolted off in the opposite direction. She was fast... she might just be able to out run this thing.
